Trophy Presentation

Left to right Jon Emmett GBR, Ruth Ho SIN, Chai Xun SIN, Denise Chagas BRA, Terrence Choo SIN, Darren Choy SIN, Najwa Jumali SIN, Germaine Teo SIN, Michael Louzada BRA.

The Trophy presentations went ahead on the basis of the results after 14 races and four days of sailing as the last day's sailing of races 15 and 16 was cancelled for lack of wind.

The new Byte CII World Champion is Darren Choy of Singapore who sailed what can only be described as a perfect series. He never won any of the 14 races but was so consistent in the tremendously varying conditions that his average point score per race, (counting his two drops!) was a mere 4. His 12 scored race finishes were five 2nds, four 3rds, a 4th, a 6th and a 7th!

Darren holds "Wally" the Eskimo walrus carving.

Terrence Choo of Singapore was Second Overall, also with a very consistent series. He receives his trophy from David Sprague who was Race Officer for the Championship Series.Without the DNF, when his halyard broke, he was never out of the top ten in his scored races and was the winner of three.

Chai Xun of Singapore, Third Overall,  beat out Jon Emmett for third place by 1 point, also without winning a race!

Jon Emmett was Fourth Overall. Here he takes temporary posession of Wally from Tim Irwin, Chairman of CORK, as the trophy never made it to the Weymouth Championship and was never presented to Jon. He subsequently presented it to Darren Choy. Jon won 6 of the 14 races.

        Najwa Jumali 2009 World's Women's Champion and 5th Overall
First Female and Women's World Champion Najwa Jumali of Singapore was also Fifth Overall in the fleet with a particularly strong performance in the heaviest day of the series when winds reached 22 knots and she scored three 5th place finishes.

Sixth Overall winner Michael Louzada from Brazil was at his best in the heavy air with three 2nds on the heaviest day. He was also 4th in the 2008 World's in Weymouth.

Second Female and eighth overall, Germaine Teo from Singapore was sailing her second World's having also sailed in Weymouth in 2008. She is presented with her trophy by Malinda Keith, Secretary of the International Jury.

Third Female was Ruth Ho SIN who finished 11th overall and who started out slowly but got stronger and stronger as the regatta wore on.

Denise Chagas from Brazil, who was also Fourth Female in the regatta, is presented with the Masters Trophy for sailors over 40 by Malinda Keith, Secretary of the International Jury. Denise is a repeat winner having won the Masters in Thailand in 2007.

                              Youth Trophies

Other trophies were awarded to the top three 16-and-under sailors (i.e. will not turn 17 in 2009). They just happened to be the top three finishers in the regatta! Furthermore, all three will be eligible for the first Youth Olympic games to be sailed in Singapore in August, 2010. Harry Keith, Chairman of the Jury, presents World Champion Darren Choy with his 1st place Youth Trophy.
